Welcome to English IV!   The course is basically a survey of British literature. By the end of the semester you will be able to do the following:

bulletIdentify major British writers, themes, and literary movements
bulletAnalyze literary works and discuss them in an intelligent way
bulletIdentify literary devices and use them effectively in your own writing
bulletUse the writing process to communicate ideas effectively about literature and life
bulletResearch a topic, write a paper about your findings using MLA documentation, create a portfolio and a project, and communicate your findings in an effective oral presentation
bulletWork effectively within groups
bulletMake creative and effective oral presentations individually and with a team

This class is for college bound students.  The design and intent is to prepare you not only for college, but also for any standardized tests you may take.  Please keep in mind that a successful college-bound student

bullet

possesses time to devote to assignments

bullet

reads and thinks about text (does not depend on Cliff Notes)

bullet

accepts and learns from constructive criticism

bullet

learns for the sake of obtaining knowledge, not just obtaining a grade

bullet

shares opinions with an open mind and can learn from others

bullet

is conscientious and thoroughly completes all assignments on time

bullet

accepts responsibility and refrains from excuses

bullet

recognizes that an A is for outstanding effort and does not come easily

We will do many class activities, but the majority of the reading will be done AT HOME. If you do not complete your reading assignment, the class may suffer because they will be unable to complete the planned activities of the day. Also, your grade will suffer because I give many daily quizzes on what you have read. I expect that you have a high level of personal responsibility and that you intend to do all of the course work, or you would not be taking the class.

I like to help all of my students, so if you are struggling or having individual problems with the material or the course, please see me.  Also, if you are struggling in my class or you are an ESL student, these websites might offer additional help (Click here).
